BRANDON, Florida – Christin Stewart, the Detroit Tigers’ rookie left fielder, was kicking back and relaxing, eating nachos off a plastic plate, sitting on a black-and-gray couch, and he started to laugh, watching about 20 of his teammates hit golf balls at a high-tech driving range.
Stewart is not a golfer — never been on a golf course in his life — but he came for pitcher Matthew Boyd.
They all did.
There is something likable about this collection of players. Something appealing. It’s like a band of misfit toys. There is the aging superstar in Miguel Cabrera. Several fill-in players on short-term deals. A few who are waiting to be traded. A smattering of young players facing a make-it-or-break-it season. And that rookie, eating nachos and smiling at his teammates. Stewart represents the start of the first wave of young prospects, about to hit Detroit.
